In loving memory of Rocky Belk

Posted by: Mary Smaragdis on: July 22, 2010

Mr. Belk passed away last week. Memorial services are today back home.  But I’m in California this week and I can’t go to the services.

I’ll remember him here…

Mr. Belk was a P.E. teacher at my kids’ school. He taught all three of them and has been in my life for the better part of a decade.

He was an extraordinary man.

His accomplishments were so inspiring to me and the kids — and to everyone he touched. He began his career as a professional football player. And then he became a teacher — he taught for more than 30 years.

He never missed a day of school until he fell sick last spring.

Every day when we’d walk to school, Mr. Belk would be outside at the kiss-and-drop. He’d open car doors, and get the kids going for their day. Rain, snow, cold, heat… he was always outside. Never missed a day. So many kids started their days with a kind word from Mr. Belk.

My son had a special relationship with him.

Mr. Belk was a towering man of great strength. He set this incredible example around keeping your body fit and your mind strong. To see my son and Mr. Belk together just warmed my heart. Every morning when we’d walk into the school, my son would go over to the kiss-and-drop to catch Mr. Belk’s eye… he wanted to always say hello.

Every once in a while, Mr. Belk, would run over and give my son a pat on the head.

Mr. Belk was my son’s favorite teacher. He would tell my son: “you’re the strongest kid in first grade.” And my son would do push-ups at home at night…

He always kept it real. Mr. Belk always kept it real.

And he was so very kind.

He was a noble man and I’m so sad that he’s gone. It makes me profoundly sad that my son won’t have Mr. Belk greeting him when we go back to school in the fall. It makes me so sad that I won’t have him either.

May his memory be eternal.

I can’t seem to fully load this post from my droid!!!

I played 2 seasons for Rocky as the kicker….he voted me MVP one season…One night, after an early field goal miss or two Rocky walked me and the whole team out to the field for a third effort….he said I’d keep kicking them til I made them…eventually I did…I went on to play in college and Rocky has a special part in my life…

Andy, thanks for posting the comment.

I still see Mr. Belk everywhere. His life was so big that he left such a huge emptiness behind…

I was so saddened to learn of Rocky Belk’s passing. Rocky was my now 10 year-old son’s P.E. Teacher at Nottingham Elementary, when my son was in pre-school there. The class was a mix of hearing impaired preschoolers and hearing preschoolers, who served as model peers. My son was one of the model peers. Rocky towered over the preschoolers, but was as gentle a man as I have ever met. He embraced these small children, and they embraced him. My son also attended birthday parties hosted by Rocky – with his equipment, he could transform a bare multi-purpose room into the most fun birthday event ever. When you met him, you knew that you were around someone special, someone who grounded you, and made you feel connected. He was always positive, affirming, and other-centered. My son had a little trouble with the letter “r” back then. So, when he said, “Mr. Rocky,” it came out “Mr. Wocky.” He never said a word to my son, but this delighted Rocky! He pulled me aside one day and confided that no one had ever called him “Mr. Wocky” before. We feel his loss deeply, as I am sure so many other friends and family members do.

Karen, thank you for sharing your story.

Mary- Rocky & I were best friends in high school. Your blog really warmed my heart to learn that Rocky continued to share his warmth & kindness with so many children & adults alike throughout his life. We were all blessed to have known Rocky Belk.

Diana, he touched so many lives. He was truly such a great man.

Hi Diana

I ran across this post of yours as I was searching to find out about Rocky. I just read in the paper today that he had died. That is truly sad. Was it sudden? Missed David at the 30th.

John

nice, Mary. I wrote one for Rocky as well.

Ben, It’s going to be really tough when we go back to school in September. I don’t think I’ll be able to look over to the Kiss-and-Drop without expecting to see him.

Thanks so much for posting this!! From Nottingham Elem and just found out this morning from a friend about Rocky! So sad! He was truly an amazing man. My son loved his football camp (Nottingham Enrichment program) and his birthday parties! Always smiling and caring. We had no idea he was sick. I’d like to share your post with some friends – hope it’s ok?! Thanks again.

Liz, please feel free to share. We’ll miss him so much.

Mary,

I just chanced upon this when surfing tonight, and I’m so glad I did. My family attended Mr Belk’s memorial service on Thursday night – and what a celebration. He was a hero to many people, and clearly that includes his wonderful family. They had that church rocking in celebration! Stories (most of them VERY funny), confirmation of Rocky’s faith in his students, the goodness of people and God, and a whole lot of love – all kept those attending laughing and dancing between the tears. Long Branch families and staff showed an outpouring of love for this great man. Thanks for your wonderful piece. The first day back will be very sad without Mr Belk greeting the kids.

Thank you for sharing this, Elizabeth. Thank you.

Maria,

I happened upon this when I googled Rocky’s name. This is such a beautiful tribute to him. I am with the Fort Hunt High School class of 1979 (Rocky’s graduating class) website. If you could, we are putting together a tribute to send to his family with memories such as yours. Could you /or I post this one the site? I am attaching the link for anyone that would like to post a tribute to include.
It is not surprising that he touched so many lives after he graduated, he did the same during our high school years as well.

Fondly,
Patti

Sorry, I forgot the link.

Patti, I would love to post it there but I couldn’t figure out how to log in. Would it be possible for you to post it for me?

Mary, I’m replying on behalf of Patti. The link above is a private discussion forum, but our class does have a memorial page dedicated to Rocky at http://www.fhhs79.com/class_profile.cfm?member_id=1036064.

I have placed a note there with a link to your lovely tribute.

Warm regards,
Terry

Hello Mary. I am trying to confirm if this is the same Rocky Belk that my husband, who played college football w/ Rocky, and I know from U. of Miami. You don’t mention the name of your kids school. Is it Long Branch Elementary School. We hope it is not the same Rocky!!!

It’s the same Rocky, Debra.

I’m so sorry.

Beautiful Mary!! We will think of you and your beautiful memorial tonight at the service.

Maria, it breaks my heart. I just can’t believe it’s real. It makes me so sad.
